Mark Wheeler

Music Leader

About

Mark grew up in Cheshire, beginning clarinet lessons at the age of 6. At secondary school, he started playing the saxophone, and it was when he joined the school big band that he discovered his love of jazz. Throughout his education, Mark benefitted greatly from the opportunities afforded to him by both Sandbach School and the Love Music Trust, including the chance to play at the 2017 European Saxophone Congress in Porto, Portugal.

At a young age, Mark also joined his local church choir, and has carried on his love of choral singing throughout his education, and now sings with the choir of Huddersfield Parish Church.

Mark went on to study music at the University of Huddersfield where he engaged in wide range of disciplines including performance, composition, and musicology. He graduated with First Class honours in 2022, also being awarded the Williams Prize for woodwind performance.

Alongside his work with Calderdale Music, Mark is studying for a master’s degree in Music Performance, specialising in jazz and commercial woodwind performance.
