About

Originating from Tameside in Greater Manchester, Matt has been a keen and avid musician from an early age, starting classical guitar lessons at aged 9 and eventually achieving Grade 7 in classical guitar and grade 5 theory. He soon found a passion for rock music and gravitated towards playing the electric guitar, bass, ukulele, drums and percussion.

Since then, Matt has continued his life-long passion to be an accomplished and diverse musician. As a young adult, Matt earned a living as a wedding DJ and performed in a cabaret band, as well as offering private guitar tuition. He returned to university as a mature student and in 2007, achieved a first-class BA (hons) degree in Popular Music from University of Huddersfield. He completed his PGCE the following year and since then, has spent his working life as a secondary school music teacher in Kirklees.

Over the years, Matt has performed in a variety of bands and in numerous musical styles, from Classic Rock to Progressive Metal, Soul, Blues and Latin-American percussion. For the last 10 years, he has played the mandolin and guitar in the Manchester-based Folk band, ‘Run Out the Guns’, performing at festivals and venues across the country.

Matt is delighted to have joined Calderdale music in 2024 and is keen to share his expertise and passion for music with the young people of Calderdale.
